The human solution international is a non-profit organization dedicated to ongoing prison reform. Our long term goal is to change the U.S. and world’s prison systems away from mass incarceration and gearing it more towards community and counseling based services. Our immediate goal is to help newly released prisoners successfully reenter society and become productive citizens. As well as to help people currently in prison get out.
From the mid-1970s onward, public policy has emphasized punishment and retribution. The result today is a burgeoning prison population, massive state and federal expenditures on the prison system, and a growing realization that releasing offenders without support mechanisms creates a revolving-prison-door phenomenon.
Over “650,000 people are released from prison each year,” and often they return to the “high-crime, poverty-stricken communities from which they came, still battling . . . intractable poverty, educational and job training deficits, [and] drug addictions or mental illnesses that contributed to their criminality in the first instance.”
The community benefits when ex-offenders become contributing members of society who do not commit new crimes.
One of the main problems with the current prison system is that it doesn’t really look at the root cause of an offenders behavior. By not examining what caused the person to act poorly in the first place, it becomes extremely difficult to rehabilitate them properly. If people can’t be properly rehabilitated, their chances of offending again are very high. Thus almost perpetuating a circle of crime and punishment, with no real solution. Other than building more prisons and exasperating the
problem.
THS International aims to end this cycle.
The main thing we can do right now to help with mass incarceration is peaceful
activism. The overall goal of this activism is to get local, state, and federal laws to
change their approach towards the prison system. If we can focus more on counseling the individuals who are arrested, while giving them support post reentry. This should drastically help reduce the
number of prisoners reoffending. We can do this by working with lawmakers and voters to pass bills that will incentivize correction centers with bonuses for every prisoner they successfully rehabilitate, and for every year they spend out of jail. Rather
than just paying them to essentially store people.
We are currently doing two things to help this system as much as we can. First, we try to educate people on the problems presented by the prison system. Such as overpopulation, the percentage of people who reoffend, and the cost in taxes to the everyday citizen. After they’re informed, we try to work with them to contact and drive our local government agencies to enact new bills and policies that would help push our goals. Second, we help people who are getting out of prison by offering rehabilitation classes. As well as offering a community of people that they can talk to with any questions they may have.
